“Облога Маріуполя” — siege map

A siege map of Mariupol for «Облога Маріуполя» (“The Siege of Mariupol”) by photojournalist Yevhen Maloletka, reconstructing the city, its encirclement around 3 March 2022, and the locations behind the photographs — the maternity hospital, the drama theatre, the besieged districts.

The hardest part was the data. In the first days of the full-scale invasion the monitoring services were not yet running and people were in shock, so there was no clean source for the situation on the ground. The map was built on OSM data for early 2022 and vectorised from fragments found across Twitter and other social media — closer to archaeology than to mapping. Work began in early December 2024 and the map went through several styles before the final one; the book came out in early 2026.

An important book to have been part of — with thanks to Yevhen Maloletka.
