Max Kidruk, "Stars over Easter Island" — Maps
Route maps for Max Kidruk's collected travelogues (Bearded Tamarin), drawn over blurred satellite imagery to unify regions spanning Mexico to Easter Island at very different scales.
Maps for Stars over Easter Island by Max Kidruk, published in Ukrainian by Bearded Tamarin. The volume brings together, for the first time under one cover, all of Kidruk’s travelogues — Mexican Chronicles (2009), Journey to the Navel of the Earth (2010), Love and Piranhas (2011), and To New Zealand (2012) — in a new edition with previously unpublished photographs.
The maps trace the routes of these journeys across Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Easter Island. This was not the first collaboration with Kidruk; the task was to create unusual maps in keeping with a book about travel. Blurred satellite imagery of each region serves as the colour basis, giving a set drawn at very different scales a single consistent look — coastlines, terrain, and ocean rendered as soft photographic ground, with each route picked out as a single thread of cities and landmarks.
A further challenge was the scarcity of Ukrainian place names in the public domain, many of them simply transliterated from Russian. The author corrected the names and toponyms throughout, several of which appear in Ukrainian here for the first time.
