Maps and route diagrams for Buried in the Sky (Bearded Tamarin), tracing two Sherpa climbers' path from the Himalayas to the 2008 K2 disaster and the rescue in the death zone.
A set of general maps and climbing-route diagrams for “Buried in the Sky” by Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan, translated into Ukrainian by Natalia Yatsiuk and published by Bearded Tamarin. Several approaches were explored before settling on the final designs.
The maps and diagrams document the events of 1 August 2008, when eleven climbers died on K2 and two Sherpa climbers — Chhiring Dorje and Pasang Lama — survived. The cartography traces the Sherpas’ journey from their home villages high in the Himalayas, through Kathmandu and the glaciers of Pakistan, to the base camp on the slopes of the world’s most dangerous peak. The route diagrams focus on the critical moments of the descent — Chhiring finding Pasang stranded on an ice ledge in the death zone, and the rescue that followed.
The book reconstructs one of the worst tragedies in mountaineering history while telling the story of the Sherpa people, without whom modern high-altitude climbing would be impossible.
